Roller chain is not your only option. Synchronous belt drive systems offer numerous benefits over conventional chain drives and many gear systems:

When considering the investment costs, belts typically last three times longer than chain, and the sprockets typically last ten times longer. The total cost of ownership for a belt drive is significantly less than a chain.
No lubrication and no metal-to-metal part wear deliver a low maintenance drive. Hours spent lubricating and retensioning can be refocused on more critical tasks.
Production is lost every time the drive is shut down. Less maintenance means less downtime.

HTD

HTD and timing belts have historically been the most commonly used rubber synchronous belt profiles in the industry. Gates originated the HTD tooth profile, whose curvilinear design delivers greater load capacity than trapezoidal-toothed timing belts. Gates offers the industry’s greatest range of standard belt lengths and widths. Gates small pitch sizes are ideal for precision positioning and light power applications, such as office machines and robotic equipment. In larger pitch sizes, they are cost-effective performers in a wide range of industrial applications, such as agricultural, oil field and HVAC equipment.

HTD and timing belts were built to be industry workhorses. The fiberglass tensile cord provides high strength, excellent flex life, and high resistance to elongation. The neoprene body provides protection against grime, grease, oil and moisture. The nylon tooth facing provides a durable wear surface for long service life. There are over 370 standard timing belt lengths and a variety of widths, in MXL, XL, L, H, XH, XXH pitches. There are over 230 standard HTD belt lengths and a variety of widths, in 3mm, 5mm, 8mm, and 14mm pitches.

HTD belts provide thirty percent increase in horsepower ratings, as compared to traditional timing belts. In small pitch sizes, HTD and timing belts are well-suited for light power applications and those requiring precise positioning, such as data storage, hand power tools, postage and money handling equipment, food processors, office machines, centrifuges, medical diagnostic equipment, sewing machines, ticket dispensers, robotics, vending machines and vacuum cleaners. In larger pitch sizes, HTD and timing belts provide synchronized power transmission for a wide range of machinery used in agriculture, construction, mining, forestry, and in the process and manufacturing industries.

Gates PowerGrip GT2

The Racehorse. This is the performance choice for a wide variety of high-speed (above 500 rpm) drive applications. PowerGrip GT2 will deliver more power at a lower overall cost than any other rubber synchronous belt drive system available. As an authorized Gates distributor, B & B Manufacturing stocks thousands of sizes in the Gates PowerGrip GT2 series of pulleys and belts in 2mm, 3mm, 5mm, 8mm, and 14mm pitches.

HTD belts were the 1st generation of curvilinear synchronous belts, providing excellent torque capacity. The PowerGrip GT2 Belt Drive System is an advance in product design over the Gates' older standard HTD system. The PowerGrip GT2 Belt Drive System combines the best in technology and construction design to give improved performance and extended product life. The PowerGrip GT2 Belt Drive System provides timing and synchronization accuracy that provides excellent registration, with no loss of torque carrying capability. The performance far exceeds HTD and trapezoidal belt capabilities, making PowerGrip GT2 belts the choice for precision registration, heavy loads and small sprockets.

The Workhorse. This is an optimal choice in meeting your needs for low-speed (below 500 rpm), high-torque drive applications. The powerful Poly Chain GT2 polyurethane belt drive system will outperform roller chain drives, delivering the lowest-cost belt drive system available for low-speed, high-torque applications.
